GSL was started in the early 1958 in Hong Kong. It began by connecting the home location to the African continent. In the early 1980s, services were extended to cover Far East Africa & the Indian subcontinent, via the Indian Ocean Feeder Service. It formed the SAFARI Group in 1981 in association with Safmarine, Mosk, NYK, Nedlloyd, and K-Line. This facilitated cargo carriage between Japan and South Africa.
